Ohio Attorney General Updates Written Estimate Requirements
Changes take effect on August 10, 2015
The Ohio Attorney General’s Office recently filed an administrative rule that would change the threshold value for when automotive repair facilities need to provide customers with a repair estimate prior to moving forward with a repair.
Currently, automotive repair facilities are required to provide customers with estimates anytime a repair exceeds $25. This threshold has not been updated in nearly three decades and does not appropriately reflect the cost associated with modern-day repairs. Under the Attorney General’s proposal, the threshold value would be increased to $50.
The current $25 threshold forces repair facilities to write an estimate and acquire a signature simply to inspect the vehicle – this is before making any actual repairs. This requirement delays the repair process, even for the most minor repair (very few repairs fall under the $25 dollar threshold). By increasing the threshold to a more appropriate $50 value, automotive repair shops would be able to inspect the vehicle without having to complete a repair order. Once the initial inspection is complete and a repair shop has a better idea of what is wrong with the vehicle, it will then be able to provide the customer with a more accurate repair estimate.
The cost to repair vehicles has increase significantly since the repair estimate threshold value was initially created. Unfortunately, this threshold value has not been increased since that time. The Automotive Service Association of Ohio (ASA Ohio) advocated on behalf of its membership throughout the rule making process and commends the Attorney General’s Office on its decision.
Please be sure to change the dollar amount listed on any signage near your write up area or on your repair order.
The rule is scheduled to take effect on August 10th, 2015. A copy of the new rule can be found through the following link: http://www.registerofohio.state.oh.us/pdfs/109/4/3/109$4-3-13_PH_FF_A_RU_20150727_1656.pdf
