Workforce Training Grant Program Introduced

ASA Ohio is happy to announce the introduction of House Bill 1, which will create a workforce training grant program. Rep. Kirk Schuring (R-Canton) and Rep. Nathan Manning (R-North Ridgeville) introduced the measure to reward students pursuing education in in-demand fields, which includes the automotive repair profession. If passed, we hope this legislation will help motivate students to pursue jobs in the automotive service field, as well as encourage technical schools and community colleges to work alongside automotive repair businesses to better train future technicians.

The proposal would provide up to $5,000 per student for those pursuing coursework in an in-demand job field. To earn funding, a student must also spend three months in a workplace setting that is similar to the job they are seeking. If students complete their education and get a job in that in-demand field, they would be eligible for a 25% annual tax credit on what they pay on student loans. The bill will also require grant recipients to receive “soft skill” training that would cover things such as interpersonal skills and work ethic.

"This will give the student the opportunity to see what the workplace is really like and get a feel for whether they want to continue on that path," Rep. Schuring said at a press conference on the bill. "It also will give an opportunity for employers to develop a relationship with the student so hopefully that will lead to a permanent position."

ASA Ohio has been working with lawmakers on ways to address the workforce shortage within the automotive service industry. House Bill 1, in addition to our work with other stakeholders, will bring attention to the workforce shortage and encourage Ohio’s young people to pursue careers in our field.
